Obituary for James G Gallagher Jr.
WEST BROOKFIELD- James G. Gallagher Jr. died Friday May 12, 2017 in Brookhaven Assisted Care. James was born in 1922 in Dorchester MA. He was the son the late James G Gallagher and Helen G (Byrne)Gallagher Most of his childhood years, he grew up in Quincy Ma. He married Kathryn E. Wineman in 1951 in Vandergrift PA and moved back to Massachusetts shortly thereafter. He raised his family in Auburn MA. He and Kass moved to Spencer MA with his youngest daughter when Kass’s health was failing. As his health declined, he made is home at Brookhaven Assisted Care in West Brookfield.
Jim was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army during the central Europe and Rhineland campaigns. He served with Company A 1269th Engineer Combat Battalion. His listed official occupation while in the Army was Water Supply Technician. He qualified as an expert rifleman.
After his military service, he went Northeastern University and graduated with a BS in Engineering. He continued his education towards Master’s Degree at Clark University which due to life circumstances, he did not complete. He believed in the value of education and spent the rest of his life studying about his Catholic faith.
Jim was predeceased by his wife, Kathryn W. Gallagher; his son, David F. Gallagher, and daughter, Kathryn E. Harden. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret G. Balint and her husband John, of Stratford CT and his daughter-in-law, Lucille Gallagher (McKeown) of Douglas MA.; 5 grandsons, John Balint, James, David and Timothy Gallagher and Jacob Harden; 3 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
We would like to thank all the staff and patients of Brookhaven who welcomed him into their family. The care they offered during the last few days will never be forgotten.
Friends and family are invited to attend a calling hour on Thursday, May 18,2017 from 11:45-12:45AM in Pillsbury Funeral Home 163 Main St. Spencer. The funeral will follow with a Mass at 1:00PM in Our Lady of the Rosary Church 7 Church St. Spencer. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Auburn.
